Best Pod Coffee Maker

Pod machines have grown considerably in popularity, simply insert a pod and let the machine take the stress out of making coffee… But which is the best pod coffee maker? We take a look at three Keurig contenders and two Nespresso models to find out which is ultimately the best pod coffee maker!

KEURIG K350 2.0Best Pod Coffee Maker

Keurig has become the name in single-cup brewing with convenient pods, and the Keurig 2.0 K350 takes that to the next level by allowing you to choose between serving sizes of your favorite coffee in one convenient machine.

Features

• Designed to use three different types of Keurig pods—K-Cup, K-Mug, and K-Carafe
• Touch-pad on the front for changing settings such as cup size and strength
• Brews single cup or 4-cup carafe
• 60 oz. water reservoir

What Makes It Different From Other Pod Coffee Makers?

The K350 allows you to brew the perfect amount of coffee from various pods, or you can also use a variety of reusable coffee filters for your own grounds designed to fit in the K-Cup slot. Keurig 2.0 technology actually reads the lid of Keurig pods to choose the optimal pre-settings for brewing. With the features listed, it’s easy to be ready for a cup or carafe of coffee at one touch of a button with no need for extra filters or messy grounds.

Potential Drawbacks

One thing to remember is that the cost of coffee pods is going to be more per cup than standard grounds or whole beans. This can add up over time, and some users may not be a fan of the extra waste as well. Also, the technology that allows for reading the lid and finding the right pre-settings can limit the use of off-brand pods that are sometimes cheaper than Keurig-branded cups.

Verdict

On the whole, this is a perfect device for regular coffee drinkers that like to have options between single cups and multiple servings. The Keurig 2.0 K350 is a step forward if you’ve already grown used to the convenience of K-Cups, and a great way to try them out if you haven’t before.

Best Pod Coffee Maker

Kitchenaid Nespressobest pod coffee maker

KitchenAid puts its classic metal design into the KES0504FP Nespresso Bundle. This frosted pearl machine offers a high pressure system for excellent coffee quality.

Features

• Brew strength selector with six pre-programmed settings.
• Easy loading capsule system.
• Removable, 1.3 liter water tank.
• Milk frothier.
• 16 Nespresso capsules.
• 19 bar pressure system.
• Starts up in 30 seconds.
• Die cast metal construction.
• Adjustable cup shelf.

What Makes It Different From Other Pod Coffee Makers?

The machine yields rich espresso. It is built with a heavy metal construction. The apple-red paint is flashy but is deceiving as this system is a work horse. A free milk frother and 16 pods provide versatility while a starter kit has the instructions needed to learn how to make great espresso even for someone who has never done so. For the machine it is, the KitchenAid is easy to use. The water reservoir fits perfectly in back. It holds up to 1.3 liters of water, enough for several cups. Status indicators are white LEDs, and just pick the size to pour by using the radial dial.

Potential Drawbacks

There’s virtually no set up required once taking this out of the box. Just run some water through to filter out any dirt or debris that have collected during shipping, if there is any. There are less expensive espresso machines out there but this is fine for anyone looking for guaranteed quality.

Verdict

The KES0504FP Nespresso Bundle does a lot and is easy to use, even for someone who is not experienced. It offers easy capsule loading and a brew strength selector. Heating occurs in less than 30 seconds so this is the choice for easy and quick coffee/espresso making.

Nespresso VertuoLine EvoluoBest Pod Coffee maker

The VertuoLine Evoluo Coffee; Espresso Maker utilizes Centrifusion technology to make fresh coffee with crema, plus an authentic espresso.

Features

• Aeroccino Plus milk frother, allowing one-touch operation to prepare hot or cold milk froth.
• Centrifusion technology that brews coffee or espresso at the touch of a button.
• Removal capsule container that holds 13-20 used capsules.
• Automatically shuts off after nine minutes of non-use.
• Heats up in 15 seconds.
• Recognizes capsules with a code reader for blend-specific parametric brewing.
• Supports large coffee and small espresso capsules.
• Measures 12.3 x 9 x 12.2 inches and weighs in at 11 pounds.

What Makes It Different From Other Pod Coffee Makers?

This coffee system is differentiated by its one-touch operation. Centrifusion, a unique feature, controls extraction parameters individually and optimizes them for Grand Cru coffee. Coffee can be produced with a distinct character and one can even make new flavors containing creamy milk foam. Automatic blend recognition reads the barcode on capsules, so there is nothing to set. The package also includes 12 Nespresso VertuoLine capsules. Brewing is typically complete in 90 seconds.

Potential Drawbacks

Customers haven’t indicated any drawbacks, unless expertly brewed coffee and automated brewing are not desirable. Many French presses can be confusing to use for novices, but this does not seem to be the case here.

Verdict

Beverages can be brewed in seconds and the exact drink automatically made with a barcode scanning system. What’s not to like about that? It’s not the cheapest or most expensive machine out there. Easy capsule insertion and ejection plus convenient automation on several different levels make this an espresso machine of choice. The product may look simple, but there’s a lot of features and technology packed inside.

Best Pod Coffee Maker

KEURIG RIVOBest pod coffee maker

With the Keurig Rivo Cappuccino and Latte System, the company that changed the way many people brew single-serving coffee has created a single home machine with everything needed for making your favorite coffee-house drinks including espresso, cappuccino, and lattes.

Features

• Uses specialty Lavazza pods for brewing espresso
• Brews espresso in two sizes
• Standard 15 bars of pressure
• Froths milk at the same time using specialty pitcher

What Makes It Different From Other Pod Coffee Makers?

The Rivo will make a perfect shot of espresso while automatically frothing milk to the proper consistency for a variety of beverages. The Rivo allows for the use of skim, low-fat, whole milk, or even non-dairy products which allows you to make your beverage exactly your way. The button touches, presets, and sealed milk frothing pitcher make this a much simpler machine for making single servings of mixed coffee beverages than almost any other unit on the market.

Potential Drawbacks

This is a specialty machine. It requires very specific Rivo pods that are different from even the normal Keurig K-Cups, which will cost more than whole beans over time. There is no way to do the fresh grind that many espresso drinkers prefer in a home machine, and the frothing pitcher can sometimes be a little tricky to work with. The system also will not actually brew a regular cup of coffee based on its normal usage.

Verdict

If you’re the sort of person that is addicted to mochas and lattes and who curses the moment the coffee house closes, the Keurig Rivo could be the perfect thing for you. It may be the simplest way to make those specialty beverages in your own home with just the push of a few buttons.

Which is the Best Pod Coffee Maker?

For my money I prefer Nespresso to Keurig, but both fill a role in the marketplace I suppose. I actually think the Rivo does a good job of trying to win some of the Nespresso market, those true coffee lovers who want more authentic espresso based drinks. It certainly marks a change of tact from a normal Keurig machine, with its latte and cappuccino capability. So in fact I think, putting my own Keurig prejudices aside, I have to give this one to the Rivo, as the step between pod machines and semi-automatic espresso machines.

So the Best Pod Coffee Maker is…

The Keurig Rivo!
