Nespresso Inissia vs Pixie Review | Brackin's Bar

Nespresso Inissia vs Pixie

For over 25 years, Nespresso has been at the forefront of home coffee and espresso brewing. This Switzerland-based company has a variety of machines available. No matter what type of coffee product you enjoy, there’s a machine perfect for your needs.

We compared two of Nespresso’s most popular machines; the Nespresso Inissia vs Pixie, and decided that the Inissia is best value.

Nespresso Inissia vs Pixie

In order to accurately compare Nespresso machines, you want to look at three factors:

  • Quality and Design
  • Functionality
  • Value

Let’s take a look:

Quality and Design – Nespresso Inissia vs Pixie

Both units are some of the smallest Nespresso machines on the market. Each machine brews one cup of coffee or one shot of espresso at a time. They’re easy to operate and maintain. Let’s take a look at their overall design:

Nespresso Pixie Review

This machine is 12 3/4” by 4 3/4” by 9 3/4” high. Weighing only six pounds, this unit can easily fit onto a small countertop or table. The 24 ounce water tank is easily removable.

The unit is sleek, stylish and contemporary looking. There are only a few colors available – all various types of shiny gray – but this should fit into basically any kitchen décor. In most cases, the Pixie will match existing appliances such as stainless steel refrigerators and ranges.

Nespresso Inissia Review

The Inissia is even (slightly) smaller at a compact 12 1/2″ by 4 3/4” by 9” high. It weighs only five pounds and four ounces. Overall, this unit is perfect for small kitchens, dorm room or even the office. Like the Pixie, the Inissia tank is also 24 ounces.

The Inissia is very stylish; it’s tall and thin with a rounded top. Four color schemes are available: black, red, white and titan (a silver/gray). Even though the unit is small, the drip tray folds up to allow for larger mugs and cups. This is especially useful for lattes and cappuccinos.

Our Verdict on Quality and Design:

From purely an aesthetic purpose, we have to call this one a draw. Both machines will look great just about anywhere. If you have a specific color you’d like to have, the Inissia has more available options. But the Pixie’s Titan color is suitable for kitchens, offices and most other places you’d find a kitchen appliance.

If the machine needs to fit into a dorm room, small office or other tight spot, the Inissia will probably work better. However, the Pixie is certainly no massive machine. It will easily sit on a kitchen counter or table without any problem. Still, everything else being equal, the Inissia is the smaller machine of the two. If a small size is an important consideration, which it probably isn’t then the Inissia would be best. As it probably isn’t:

DRAW

Functionality – Nespresso Inissia vs Pixie

Both machines use Nespresso coffee capsules. You simply insert the capsule into the machine and select your cup size. Each machine includes 16 capsules.

The 1200 watt Inissia warms to brewing temperature in 25 seconds. The 1260 watt Pixie takes about 25 to 30 seconds. The Pixie has a power button while the Inissia simply turns on automatically when you press one of the service buttons. Each unit has two programmable buttons, which allow you to select shot size, one ounce pour or two to three ounce pours. This is also how you can choose between espresso and lungo.

Within 30 seconds, each machine will be ready to fill up to nine single cups of coffee before you’ll need to refill the tank. Both machines also shut off automatically after nine minutes.

Spent capsules are neatly ejected into an internal receptacle. You can store about 10 empty capsules before you’ll need to empty the receptacle. So you don’t have to fumble around with empty capsules early in the morning. The ABS plastic construction on both machines is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Our Verdict on Functionality

The two machines function in many similar ways. Both even have a 19-bar pressure pump to ensure maximum flavor extraction from the capsules. The main difference is the size. Plus, the Inissia doesn’t have a dedicated power button but the Pixie does. This would really only be an issue if you can’t wait nine minutes each morning for the Inissia to automatically shut-off. This might be a problem if the device is used in a busy office, but it’s probably not a big deal for most consumers. (And, obviously, the machine can safely run for nine minutes unattended.)

So, really, we have to call it a draw on functionality. Both machines have nearly identical features. Both brew perfect cups of coffee quickly and easily.

DRAW

Value – Nespresso Inissia vs Pixie

There is a pretty substantial price difference, especially considering these are two high quality machines.

Our Verdict on Value

We have to go by the numbers here. The Inissia is the cheaper option. This doesn’t mean the Pixie is over-priced. It’s actually one of the less expensive espresso machines in its class. But if you’re looking for the absolute best deal, we recommend the Inissia.

Nespresso Inissia

Our Recommendation

Comparing the Nespresso Pixie vs Inissia can be difficult. There are a lot of similarities between the two. But there are also some key differences:

The Pixie is the classic model. The Inissia is a little over a year old. While the Inissia is a great single-shot espresso machine, we can’t quite call it a “classic” yet.

The Inissia is the smaller model. While the difference in size isn’t great, there is a difference. If size is an important consideration, you’ll probably want to choose the Inissia.

The Inissia is also the less expensive model. The Pixie can be a bit too much for some household budgets. The Inissia, however, is priced low enough for anyone looking to purchase an espresso machine for the first time.

Why is there such a price difference between two similar machines?

Well, Nespresso isn’t saying but industry experts think the Inissia is a way to compete with the lower priced machines on the market. This is backed up by the Inissia’s availability in bright red. As fans of espresso have probably already noticed, this red is a popular color for the machines in many cafes. The Inissia is Nespresso’s way to appeal to the demographic of people who enjoy espressos and the like at cafes, and are interested in making them at home. The low price is designed to appeal to anyone who might not be an expert in making espressos at home.

But you don’t have to be a novice to enjoy a low price. You can take advantage of Nespresso’s attempt to reach a new segment of the market. This low price isn’t necessarily guaranteed to last forever, either.

Still, the Pixie is a high quality espresso machine. If you prefer the design of the Pixie, and don’t mind paying a little extra, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth. The overall look and style can actually be an important determining factor, especially due to the two machines functional similarity.

Nespresso Inissia – The Winner!

By the thinnest of margins, we have to give our recommendation to the Inissia. This is based on price alone, however. When it comes to a Nespresso comparison, there’s no real loser here. Both the Inissia and the Pixie are great buys: They’re powerful, easy-to-use and require very little maintenance. You’ll soon be brewing like a pro!Inissia
